Portraits of Black Sound

For this year’s Black History Month Collection, I’m exploring the connection between Black music and Black history

Black music carries our stories. It holds memory, emotion, movement, and meaning passed from one generation to the next. When I think about Black history, music is often where it begins, shaping how we remember, feel, and understand our collective experience.

This collection honors a selection of music artists whose work and presence have left a lasting impression on me. Some are tied to specific songs, others to the way they move through the world as creators. Together, they reflect the depth, range, and influence of Black music as living history.

I’ve chosen to honor them through illustrated theatrical posters and portraits, using my visual language to translate sound, spirit, and legacy into image.
